Literally, “Việt” is the shortened word of : “Bách Việt” refers to the wet rice cultivators who live in the low land and do farming to earn their living. The main food for these people are rice and normally it is planted in the wet fields in the large land of South China down Vietnam following the huge deltas created by the strong rivers.
The Việt people in the old time control the vast land and they started to talk to each other in order to build up the dyke systems together to control the water in the flood seasons. This lead to the birth of the first government of Vietnam named: Ấu Lạc which is originally formed up by: Âu Việt and Lạc Việt tribes.
The word: Nam in Vietnamese means the South, combining with Việt, the total word Việt Nam refers to the Wet rice cultivators living in the South of Vietnam. A name that can be traced back to the Triệu Dynasty of the 2nd century BC.
The form “Vietnam” is first recorded in the 16th-century oracular poem Sấm Trạng Trình. The name has also been found on 12 steles carved in the 16th and 17th centuries, including one at Bao Lam Pagoda in Haiphong that dates to 1558.
Between 1804 and 1813, the name was used officially by Emperor Gia Long. It was revived in the early 20th century by Phan Bội Châu’s History of the Loss of Vietnam, and later by the Vietnamese Nationalist Party. The country was usually called Annam until 1945, when both the imperial government in Huế and the Viet Minh government in Hanoi adopted Việt Nam. Since the use of Chinese characters was discontinued in 1918, the alphabetic spelling of Vietnam is official.
